Mumbai, Nov 6 (PTI) The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized 5,040 bottles of Ayurvedic hair oil worth Rs 50.35 lakh for allegedly making misleading claims of regrowing hair on bald heads, it said on Friday.
The Nashik division of the FDA seized the stock during an inspection of a beauty salon and imitation jewelry business on November 5 under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, an official statement said.
The product, marketed as V S Hair Growth Oil, was being advertised and sold through social media platforms including Instagram and Facebook with claims that it could regrow hair and promote hair growth in bald persons, the statement said.
The product label mentioned the name of the marketing firm, batch number, manufacturing date and maximum retail price of Rs 999 per 100 ml bottle. It did not carry the manufacturer's name and address or the manufacturing licence number.
The owner of the establishment, Yogesh Bhagat, did not possess a manufacturing licence or other requisite legal permissions for the Ayurvedic product, the statement said.
Further investigation is underway to find out the actual manufacturer, the FDA said.
