Thane, Nov 6 (PTI) The BJP's youth wing held protests after All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) corporator Sahar Shaikh from Mumbra in Thane shared social media posts glorifying Mughal emperor Aurangzeb on his birth anniversary.

Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leaders, during protests on Thursday, sought strict action against Shaikh, while Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane remarked that individuals harbouring such loyalties "belong across the border". Netizens also criticised Shaikh.

Shaikh, in several messages she uploaded on social media earlier this week, said Aurangzeb ruled with devotion, adding that history cannot be erased. Her messages included images of Mughal monuments and captions hailing the Mughal empire.

Aurangazeb, born on November 3, 1618 in Dahod in Gujarat, is a highly polarising historical figure due to his bigotry as well as his brutal and relentless military campaign against the Maratha Empire.

Shaikh was in the news in January this year after announcing that she would paint Mumbra, a Muslim-dominated suburb of Thane, green. She was addressing a rally after her victory from ward 30 in the Thane civic polls. She later apologised after other parties accused her of communalism.
