Kolkata, Nov 4 (PTI) West Bengal Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul on Wednesday said the state government is willing to allow Chhath Puja at Rabindra Sarobar this year, provided adequate precautions are taken to prevent pollution.
If this is done, then the lake in South Kolkata will be reopened for Chhath after six years, since 2020, when KMDA strictly implemented the ban.
Rabindra Sarobar has remained closed for Chhath Puja to comply with a ban ordered by the NGT, which was upheld by the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. The restrictions were aimed at protecting the ecology of the South Kolkata lake, which is a popular spot for morning walkers, rowers and nature lovers, from pollution caused by ritual offerings, immersion of materials and large gatherings.
Paul asked where devotees living in the surrounding localities would go if the lake was kept out of bounds.
"Why can't Rabindra Sarobar be allowed? Where will the people of the locality go?" she asked, adding that permission is planned with pollution-related precautions.
Asked how the government plans to deal with the National Green Tribunal's order, she said an amicable solution could be found.
Chhath Puja, dedicated to the Sun God, will be observed on November 15 and 16, with devotees offering prayers to the setting sun on the first evening and to the rising sun the next morning.
