Gurugram, Nov 4 (PTI) A chemical-laden tanker overturned and caught fire on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway in Nuh district on Wednesday, leaving its driver critically injured and triggering a massive traffic jam, police said.
The accident occurred around noon near Khod Basai, close to the Nuh-Gurugram border, under the Rojka Meo police station area.
According to police, the tanker was travelling from Manesar to Palwal when the driver allegedly shifted it into neutral while negotiating a downhill stretch. The vehicle subsequently picked up speed, went out of control and rammed into a divider before overturning.
The driver managed to jump out of the tanker but sustained critical injuries. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment, police said.
Following the accident, the chemicals spilled onto the road and caught fire, causing panic in the area. The blaze continued to burn for a considerable time, prompting the deployment of five to six fire tenders, according to officials.
As a precaution, police stopped all vehicles on the expressway, which led to congestion stretching nearly one kilometre in both directions.
Teams from the police, fire department and district administration rushed to the spot and launched firefighting operations.
"After three hours of efforts, the fire personnel managed to bring the blaze under control. The injured driver was admitted to the hospital," a Nuh police spokesperson said.
