Chandigarh, Nov 2 (PTI) Suspended AAP MLA and former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh on Monday said he has resigned as a legislator of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
Singh, who is the MLA from the Amritsar North seat, sent his resignation to Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan.
"I have resigned from the membership of Punjab Vidhan Sabha," Singh posted on Facebook and also shared his resignation letter.
"I hereby tender my resignation of my seat in the House with effect from 1.11.2026," Singh wrote in his communication to the Punjab Assembly Speaker.
Singh also resigned from the party. In a communication to Punjab AAP president Aman Arora, Singh wrote, “This is to bring to your kind notice that I have tendered my resignation as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly with effect from 1.11.2026. I hereby resign from all formats of the Aam Aadmi Party with immediate effect.”
He also sent a copy of the letter to AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal.
In a setback to AAP, Singh is likely to join the BJP.
His resignation comes close on the heels of two AAP legislators -- Chetan Singh Jouramajra from Samana and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sanour in Punjab's Patiala district -- resigning from the party's primary membership on Sunday.
He also wrote a letter to Punjab AAP pres Aman Arora
In his Facebook post, Singh, while addressing his constituents, said he would remain indebted to them till his last breath for the love and respect they showered upon him.
"With your support and the blessings of the Almighty, we must all work together in unity to rise above the politics of ribbon-cutting, and work towards making Punjab, which is currently plagued by drugs, extortion, gangsterism and corruption, a progressive and leading state once again," Singh wrote.
He claimed that he completed 90 per cent of the targets as an MLA.
On his biggest achievement, Singh said he put an end to the 'Mai-Baap' culture in politics and worked by treating the people as his sole source of inspiration.
"In the Punjab Legislative Assembly, I have always raised the voice of the people of Amritsar," he said, citing issues such as water supply, sewerage to the Circuit House, Company Bagh, polluted drains, Guru Nanak Dev University, Government Medical College, Saroop Rani College and the Bargari sacrilege incident.
"For the first time, issues concerning specific localities were raised in the Punjab Assembly by explicitly mentioning the names of streets and neighbourhoods," he said.
"My objective will be to formulate a future strategy in consultation with you to ensure clean politics and transparent administration. My sole objective is 'Punjab First'. I have no personal interests or vested motives beyond this," he said.
In another Facebook post on Sunday, Singh alleged that the Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal-led government completely "destroyed" a party with a revolutionary ideology that had emerged from the 'Swaraj' movement.
"The book 'Swaraj', which was the very idea behind the formation of this party, has now been left with me alone," he further said.
The former IPS officer further alleged that crime, drugs, extortion and gangsterism were rampant across Punjab
In June last year, Singh was suspended from the party for five years for allegedly indulging in anti-party activities.
Singh's suspension had come after he questioned the Punjab Vigilance Bureau action against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was arrested in a disproportionate assets case.
Singh remained a vocal critic of the AAP government over many issues.
He had earlier expressed his displeasure over the handling of the 2015 sacrilege and police-firing incident cases in Faridkot, seeking justice in the matter.
Singh was part of the Punjab Police special investigation team (SIT), which probed the 2015 Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan policing-firing incidents.
In the Assembly, he raised the 2015 sacrilege issue many times.
Singh had also been critical of the Bhagwant Mann government following the death of more than 20 people due to spurious liquor consumption in Amritsar last year.
After taking premature retirement from police service in 2021, Singh joined the Aam Aadmi Party and was later elected as the MLA from the Amritsar North seat in the 2022 Assembly elections.
