A minority Hindu family of four were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Bangladesh's Rangpur city on Saturday, forcing the CID and Detective Branch (DB) to join the investigation. As per local media reports, the family are believed to have been strangled to death.
Ganapati Chakraborty (65), a retired teacher of Rangpur District School, was found dead along with his wife, Pritilata Chakraborty (50); their daughter, Agami Chakraborty (23); and their son, Priyam Chakraborty (12). Their bodies were reportedly recovered at around 11:30 pm from the Daspara (Machhuapara) area of Rangpur, local media reports said. Priyam was a Class 5 student, while Agami had completed her master's degree in English at Rangpur Carmichael College. Ganapati Chakraborty had reportedly taken up a career in homeopathy post-retirement.
While the bodies of the mother and daughter were recovered from the staircase, the boy was found dead under a bed, the report said. Ganapati Chakraborty's body was reportedly found on the roof of the house, where they had been staying for around four years.
As per the news report, only a post-mortem can confirm the cause of death. However, a preliminary investigation suggests that all four were strangled to death. The incident may have taken place sometime between Thursday midnight and the early hours of Friday.
Pooja Chakraborty, sibling of the late Pritilata, said that she last spoke to her sister on Thursday afternoon. Since then, all phone numbers associated with the family remained switched off, which resulted in family members reaching their house in Daspara on Saturday night. However, they noticed the main gate of the house was locked and all the lights inside were switched off.
When the local police station was notified, the first responders decided to break open the door and make a forced entry.
