As Canada reels in the horror of the deadly school shooting, which claimed eight lives in British Columbia’s Tumbler Ridge, a past video showing the suspect’s mother has resurfaced, showing her defending “trans rights”.
The Instagram video resurfaced after the suspect, 18-year-old trans woman Jesse Van Rotselaar, slayed both her mother, Jennifer Strang and 11-year-old brother Emmett, in the family home.
In the video, Jesse’s mother, Jennifer Strang, was heard urging her followers to stop “spewing bulls–t” online. In the video, she is heard warning that hate against trans kids was pushing them towards suicide. He added that such rhetoric makes them look “dumb.”
She called herself a conservative-leaning libertarian, adding that she loves living in the north and living in a small town. “I really hope the hate I see online is just bored old people and not true hatred,” Strang raged, urging people to “evolve” and “do better and educate yourself.

She raged that she doesn’t normally say anything against keyboard warriors. “I know I can’t control everything or shield my kids from everything, but please, for the love of f–k can you get your sh–t together so we don’t have to bring our kids up in a world full of hatred.
“Do you have any idea how many kids are killing themselves over this kind of hate. Please STOP the bulls–!”
Jennifer’s son Jesse killed six inside the school, besides Strang and her son, before dying of self-inflicted gunshot wounds. His victims included one female teacher, three female students and two male students.
There were reports that Jesse had a history of mental health issues, with police saying “mental health” calls were made at Van Rootselaar’s home. They also seized a quantity of guns from the home. No charges were, however, laid at the time, and the guns were later returned to the licensed owner.
RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald told reporters that Jesse was born a biological male. “I can say that Jesse was born as a biological male who approximately six years ago began to transition to female”, and “identified as female, both socially and publicly,” he added.
