US President Donald Trump on Tuesday suddenly sparked laughs after addressing an otherwise serious 'Summit for Peace' at Egypt's Sharm El Sheikh to support a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

In his speech, he casually called Mark Carney the “President” of Canada—rather than the Prime Minister—which first raised a few eyebrows in the room.

"You have Canada. That's so great to have. In fact, the President called, and he wanted to know if it was worth—well, he knew exactly what it is. He knew the importance. Where's Canada, by the way? Where are you? He knew the importance of this," Trump said.

“You upgraded me to President,” Carney joked, talking to Trump and United Kingdom PM Keir Starmer after the US President's address. A microphone (still switched on) caught their exchange, sparking laughs from those present, as well as netizens.

The 79-year-old president instantly realised his error, smiled, and playfully poked Carney in response.

"At least I didn't call you a governor," he said, taking a dig at himself; at the time he accidentally called Carney's predecessor, Justin Trudeau, as the 'Governor' of the 'Great State of Canada'.

“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” Trump had said in a Truth Social post, dated December 2024.

“Honest I'm really impressed with how Carney is handling Trump,” a Redditor pointed out.

“He always works in moments like these,”  an X user wrote, appreciating the humour.

“This looks positive. Trump seemed to appreciate the gesture. Let's hope that Mark Carney can make some progress on our trade and security files with the Trump administration,” another user noted on X.
