A tsunami warning was issued for Hawaii after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake was reported off Russia on Saturday night. The earthquake occurred at 8:49 p.m. local time, and the warning was issued at 9:03 p.m. It was subsequently cancelled at 9:42 p.m.

"Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat to the state of Hawaii. Therefore, the tsunami watch for Hawaii is now cancelled. This will be the final message," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated, according to local media reports. According to the center, a "Tsunami Watch" signifies that a tsunami is possible, but the situation is still being evaluated.

Two earthquakes, the larger with a magnitude of 7.4, struck in the sea off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Sunday. The larger quake occurred at a depth of 20 kilometres and was 144 kilometres east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which has a population of 180,000, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A few minutes earlier, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 was recorded nearby.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) indicated that twin earthquakes of over 6.5 magnitude struck near the coast of Kamchatka, in Russia's far east, early on Sunday. It measured the earthquakes at 6.6 and 6.7, with the depth of both at 10 kilometres, the Associated Press reported.

"If a Pacific-wide tsunami is generated, the estimated earliest arrival of the first wave is 2:43 a.m. HST," the center had stated earlier. Meanwhile, the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami threat for parts of Russia, and a separate tsunami watch was issued for the state of Hawaii.
