The Senate Republicans narrowly passed the One Big Beautiful Bill on Tuesday after it was tied in a 50-50 vote. Vice President JD Vance broke the deadlock and helping it pass in the Senate.

The bill now goes to the House of Representatives ahead of the Fourth of July deadline when US President Donald Trump expects it to be brought to his Oval Office desk.

Three of the Republicans, including Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, voted against the bill along with all the 47 Democrats in the Senate.

The bill is a whopping 940-page document, which looks at cutting taxes on tips and overtime pay as well as raising spending on defence, energy exploration and border security.

The Senate passed the bill after the Trump administration agreed to increase cuts to Medicaid. They also amended the previous version of the bill to make the key business tax breaks permanent. The new iteration of the One Big Beautiful Bill passed by the Senate has raised the debt ceiling by $5 trillion from the $4 trillion in the House version.

The bill is expected to add $3.3 trillion to the US national debt if it is passed. The total debt of the country amounts to $36 trillion, as per treasury department figures.

With the bill being sent to the House of Representatives, it remains to be seen if it will undergo more changes. If so, both chambers will have to hold a conference committee to finalise the legislation. This has to be voted through the Congress once again.
