Amid deportation fears, Indian students protest against Canadian government's immigration policy.
Thousands of Indian students in Canada have took to streets to protest against the Canadian government's move to reduce the number of low-wage, temporary foreign workers in the country.
"The labour market has changed. Now is the time for our businesses to invest in Canadian workers and youth," stated Justin Trudeau on Tuesday.
Naujawan Support Network, a student advocacy group, said thousands of immigrant students could be deported once they graduate as their work permits would expire this year.
International students, including Indians, are holding rallies across provinces like British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba and Prince Edward Island. Some of the provinces have cut Premanent Residency (PR) nominations by 25 per cent, stoking fears of deportation among international students. In Prince Edward Island, students set up camps outside the legislative assembly.
The Internationa Sikh Student Organization has slammed the claims that immigrants are responsible for the ongoing job and housing woes in the country, saying the issues are actually caused by the government's policy failures and not immigration.
Students have demanded that their work permits should be extended and proper policies for permanent residency.
