Several explosions have rocked the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv in the second overnight attack in a row, officials told Monday.

“A missile shot down near Kyiv,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram in the early hours of Monday. “Air defence working!”

“Emergency services went to a call near the centre of the capital. The attack on Kyiv continues. Don’t leave the shelters!” Kyiv mayor Klitschko wrote on Telegram.

“It’s all kicked off again. Mid-morning crashes and explosions outside. Air defence being tested again by cowardly Russians. Back in shelter,” The British ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons has tweeted.

Ukraine's state broadcaster Suspilne reported that debris had fallen on the road in the Obolonskyi district of Kyiv, which is to the north of the city. It also reported that air forces are at work in the Chernihiv region, which is to the northeast of Kyiv. Reportedly Lviv, in western Ukraine had declared an air alert in the last few minutes.

Debris has also fallen in the Podilskyi district of Ukraine’s capital. At least one person has been hospitalised as a result of the attack, Mayor Klitschko wrote on Telegram.

The governor of Russia's Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, in the meantime, said that several frontier settlements were being shelled simultaneously by Ukrainian forces, Reuters reported. Four employees had been wounded in a shelling that hit two industrial facilities in the town of Shebekino.

“In Kyiv region, in one of the districts, as a result of shelling, a farmhouse was damaged and a fire broke out. It has already been extinguished, there are no victims,” Suspilne wrote on Twitter.

S-300 and S-400 missiles were possibly used for the strike. People who initially ignored the air raid siren, rushed underground for cover as the sky filled with smoke trails and cloud blasts. Russia launched up to 40 cruise missiles and about 35 drones overnight, of which the air defence shot down 37 missiles and 29 “Shahed” drones.
