The world's oldest known person French nun Sister André died on Tuesday a the age of 118.

The city’s mayor, Hubert Falco, announced the news of her death on Twitter, writing that “it is with immense sadness and emotion that I learnt tonight of the passing of the world’s oldest person #SisterAndré.”

According to the nun’s spokesman, David Tavella, she died on Tuesday at 2 a.m. local time and lived near Toulon. “There is great sadness, but she wanted it to happen, it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it is freedom,” Tavella said, CNN reported.

Lucile Randon took the name Sister Andre in 1944 when she became a nun. She was born on Randon was born on February 11, 1904, the year New York opened its first subway. She grew up in a Protestant family in the southern town of Ales, France.

Last year, the world's oldest person Kane Tanaka of Japan died at age 119.

She became a Catholic and was baptised at the age of 26, and, fuelled by a desire to go further, she joined the Daughters of Charity order of nuns when she was 41. She was assigned to a hospital in Vichy, France, where she worked for 31 years.
