How will Britain's next PM be chosen?

An election will be held as per the rules of the 1922 committee

UKRAINE-CRISIS/BRITAIN

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation as leader of the Conservative Party on Thursday and said she would continue as Prime Minister until her successor has been chosen.

She also met with the Chairman of the 1922 committee Graham Brady and they agreed to complete the leadership election within the next week. In the meantime, a successor to Truss will be chosen.

So, how will the new Prime Minister of Britain be chosen? According to the BBC, an election will be held as per the rules of the 1922 committee. The committee consists of MPs who are legislators not holding a government office.

The contest will be between two candidates chosen by the Conservative party. Each leadership hopeful will need to secure the support of at least 100 MPs. In case three candidates are chosen, the one with the least votes will be eliminated. The entire process of choosing the successor will last only a week-- it will conclude by October 28.

The process is expected to be streamlined-- no campaigns, only a debate if at all, and voting by the party members will be done online-- this depends on whether the contest goes to a members’ vote at all. If one of the two candidates decides to drop out, the need for voting is eliminated and the remaining candidate will be made Prime Minister. The MP will then be invited by King Charles III to form a government.
