A New Zealand family found human remains in suitcases they bought at an auction. The police are investigating the matter. The family made the gruesome discovery at their home in  South Auckland when they were opening the suitcases they bought from the auction. Authorities are trying to identify the remains and they have launched a homicide investigation.

The family had bought suitcases from a local storage company last on August 11. Neighbours complained of a 'wicked smell' emanating from the property before the police arrived. The family is believed not to have been involved in the incident, BBC reported.

The police suspect that the remains of multiple individuals might be present in the suitcases. Storage facilities auctioning off contents of lockers that have faltered in rent payment is common practice. Neighbours reported seeing three hearses arrive at the family's home, they told the Daily Mail. Counselling is being offered to all family members.

'The priority for police is to confirm the identification of the deceased so that we can establish the full circumstances behind the discovery,' an NZ Police spokesperson said.
