Supporters of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan clashed with police on Wednesday as they marched towards Islamabad from different parts of the country.

Imran had called for an 'Azadi March' to Islamabad to raise the demand for early elections.

Dawn reported that police used teargas to disperse activists of Imran's PTI in the Bati and Bhatti Chowk areas of Lahore. At Bati Chowk, 10 people were arrested after the clashes.

PTI leaders tweeted that containers placed as barricades in different places in Lahore had been removed by activists.

Imran Khan departed from Peshawar for the long march around midday. He arrived at the Wali Interchange in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by helicopter. PTI central secretary for information Farrukh Habib tweeted that Imran Khan would lead a million people to Islamabad.

The News reported that the Shehbaz Sharif government could detain Imran and other members of the PTI leadership when they were en route from Peshawar to Islamabad. The report claimed detaining the PTI leadership was the only option to “stop possible carnage”.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered authorities to provide an alternate site for the PTI to conduct its Azadi March.

The government had informed it had denied permission for PTI supporters to gather on the Srinagar Highway on the grounds that there was a threat to Imran's life.
