US President Joe Biden warned that Russia could use chemical and biological weapons in Ukraine, news agency AFP reported. "His [Putin's] back is against the wall," Biden said. "They [Russians] are also suggesting that Ukraine has biological and chemical weapons in Ukraine. That's a clear sign he's considering using both of those," he said.
The UK's ministry of defence warned late on Monday that Russia could possibly be planning to use chemical or biological weapons in a 'false flag' operation in Ukraine. The UK's warning, which came in an intelligence update, reiterates fears in the West of possible use of chemical weapons in the ongoing conflict.
The UK's ministry of defence tweeted that the potential use of chemical or biological weapons “could take the form of a faked attack, a staged ‘discovery’ of agents or munitions or fabricated evidence of alleged Ukrainian planning to use such weapons”. The ministry of defence warned that the false flag operation would “almost certainly be accompanied by extensive disinformation to complicate attribution”.
Over the past week, Russia had accused the US of operating covert labs in Ukraine that were conducting research into biological weapons. The UK's ministry of defence noted: “Russian accusations that Ukraine intends to use chemical and biological weapons continue. We have seen no evidence to support these accusations.”
