Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is likely to visit Russia by end of February. This would be the first such visit by a Pakistan PM in 23 years. The meeting is happening at the behest of an invitation by Russian PM Vladimir Putin.

Khan will be accompanied by a delegation of high-ranked ministers from his cabinet. The last time a Pakistani PM visited Russia was Nawaz Sharif in 1999. Talks have been going on to finalise Putin’s visit to Islamabad too. Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune had written that Putin’s visit had been in the planning for two years but did not materialise for several reasons—the Covid-19 pandemic being one.

With the visit to Moscow, Khan’s defiance of the West becomes more evident. The visit would be right at the heels of Khan’s visit to China from February 23- 25 for the Winter Olympics. “Prime Minister Imran’s visit under the current circumstances is crucial,” a diplomat told The Express Tribune.
