At least 20 dead in explosions in military barracks in Equatorial Guinea

Explosions at military barracks in Equatorial Guinea has killed at least 20 people and injured 600. The explosions took place on Sunday, 4 pm local time. According to President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, the blast took place due to negligent handling of dynamite in the military barracks located in the neighbourhood of Mondong Nkuantoma in Bata.

The health ministry called on blood donors via Twitter. The fire brigade is assisting victims and transferring injured to hospitals. A state news channel showed footage of smoke rising above the explosion site as crowds fled. 

Images shared by local media show people screaming and crying. The images also showed half destroyed houses. The oil-rich Central African nation, located south of Cameroon has a population of 1.3 million. 

Foreign Minister Simen Oyono Esono Angue met with foreign ambassadors and asked for aid, an AP report reads.
