Former president Donald Trump, in his first public address since stepping down from office, hinted at running for the office in 2024. While addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando, Florida, he repeated claims that he won the November elections and lambasted Republicans who voted against him in the latest impeachment trial.
“With your help, we will take back the House, we will win the Senate, and then a Republican president will make a triumphant return to the White House—and I wonder who that will be?” he said. The enthusiastic gathering at the conference indicated Trump’s continued influence in the Republican Party, the AFP reported.
The Republican Party has been divided over Trump’s reiteration that he won the elections and riots at the Capitol, which were a direct result of Trump inciting his supporters to ‘fight like hell’. The former president remains to be banned on Twitter.
“We're in a struggle for the survival of America as we know it,” Trump said. “This is a terrible, terrible, painful struggle,” he added.
Trump also took a swipe at Biden’s moves reversing Trump’s anti-immigration moves and the Biden administration’s actions to tackle the coronavirus pandemic. In his speech, which lasted for 90 minutes, Trump called on Republicans to oppose Biden’s proposals in a broad immigration bill, like creating an eight-year path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants living in the country.
At a poll conducted at the CPAC, 95 per cent of respondents indicated that they wanted to continue Trump’s policies and agenda. The businessman, who returned to his home at Mar-a-Lago, after exiting the White House, has been spending his days playing golf.
