Two days after a cargo ship with 43 people and 6,000 cows went missing during Typhoon Maysak, a third sailor was found floating in a life raft in the waters off Japan, the Japan Coast Guard reported.

Jay-Nel Rosals, a 30-year-old Filipino was found 2 kilometres away from the Kodakara island on Friday afternoon. He was said to be well and was taken to the nearest hospital walking, authorities said.

Only three men have been found from the 43-people crew onboard the ship when it went missing after the Gulf Livestock 1 transmitted a distress signal early Wednesday when it was about 185 kilometres west of Amami Oshima island.

The Coast Guard found the body of one cow near the Amammi Oshima island.

The ship went missing as the area in the East China Sea was being battered by a typhoon with winds of at least 130 mph.

There was a crew of 39 Filipinos, two Australian and two New Zealanders on board the 133.6-metre long ship with approximately 6,000 cows. The cargo was travelling from Napier in New Zealand to Tangshan, China. It left Napier port on August 14.
