839 new cases of coronavirus were reported in the country on Sunday, according to Japan’s health ministry. This has raised the total number of cases in the country to 30,701, with a death toll of 1,009.

Of these, 141 cases were from Osaka and 239 were from Tokyo. Sunday is the sixth consecutive day that the capital has reported more than 200 new cases.

Case numbers have been rising in Japan in recent weeks, with the virus spreading to US military bases in Okinawa prefecture. The authorities, on Saturday, confirmed 64 new cases on the bases, a CNN report reads.

As per Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said that there has been a resurgence in the number of cases because as many as 4,000 tests are being conducted each day.

Koike and many other local governments have expressed their concern on the ‘Go To’ campaign, by saying the central government’s travel subsidy to promote domestic travel could increase the number of cases and impact regional healthcare systems. The people of Japan have also criticised the new ‘Go To’ campaign which is an initiative by the Japanese government.

The campaign aims at providing 50 per cent subsidies to travellers to boost local tourism and is aimed at helping the travel industry, that has been hard hit by the novel coronavirus. President Shinzo Abe is investing $16 billion into this campaign. However, with the resurgence of cases in the national city Tokyo, the campaign will be excluded here.
