The local police in Lawrence Township in New Jersey announced that two 17-year-old boys have been arrested for allegedly hurling racist abuse and urinating on a black student.

The incident happened during a football game on Friday night between the students of the Lawrence and Steinert High Schools. Police are investigating claims that multiple students were targeted.

The Trentonian, a local newspaper, reported that the police were treating the incident as a racial crime. Lawrence Police Chief Brian Caloiaro was quoted as saying, "It is alleged that racially derogatory names were being used and that someone urinated on one of the victims while using this language."

Lawrence Mayor Christopher Bobbit said he was "100 per cent" certain the incident involved only students from the town's high school.

Police confirmed the 17-year-old suspects were residents of Lawrence and were both of "Indian descent". Police said the duo was charged with "harassment, bias intimidation and lewdness".

The Trentonian quoted the parent of a student studying in the seventh grade as saying students from the Steinert school were involved in the incident and had tried to urinate on a group of girls and used racially abusive language.

Planet Princeton, another local news site, claimed the victim was an “eight-grade girl who is black”.
