PM of Papua New Guinea Peter O'Neill announced his resignation on Sunday after many members of his party defected to the opposition and he even took legal action to prevent a vote of no confidence on Tuesday. He however had stalled the process of stepping down about a month ago by similar means.

He has been holding the position of PM for seven years. The string of cabinet resignations was sparked by O'Neill signing a multi-billion-dollar liquefied natural gas deal with France's Total and US firm ExxonMobil earlier this year. It is not clear as to who will be the next PM.

The opposition says that former prime minister Sir Julius Chan will not win the vote. The parliament will convene to decide who the next prime minister will be.

In a lengthy filing, O'Neill said he wanted to “ensure clarity of constitutional and legal processes.”
