A day after senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh created a flutter, lauding the organisational power of RSS-BJP, the opposition party swung into damage control mode, saying there was nothing to learn from the Sangh.
Singh shared an old picture of Narendra Modi with BJP leader L.K. Advani and said how a grassroots worker went on to become the chief minister and prime minister by sitting at the feet of their leaders.
Distancing itself from Singh’s remark, Congress linked the RSS to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse and said the party has nothing to learn from it.
"There's nothing to learn from the RSS. What can an organisation known for Godse teach an organisation founded by Gandhi?,” Congress leader Pawar Khare asked.
However, the discontent among party leaders over Singh’s remark was visible as evidenced in a post of MP Manickam Tagore.
“Famous Self goal.. we have one,” Tagore wrote as he shared the video of an own goal in a football match.
In another tweet, he stressed that the Congress had nothing to learn from “Godse’s organisation other than hate”.
“Congress at 140 still young and fights hate,” he said.
Singh’s remarks praising the organisational functioning of BJP-RSS came ahead of the CWC meeting that decided on its agitational plan against the scrapping of MGNREGA from January 5.
A PTI report quoted sources as saying that Singh raised the issue of strengthening the Congress organisation at the grassroots level, asserting it was much needed in the fight against the ruling BJP and to oust it from power.
He was, however, stopped by some other senior leaders during the meeting from raising matters other than MGNREGA on which the CWC was convened, the sources said.
Singh later clarified on his statement, saying he has been a staunch opponent of the BJP and the RSS.
"In fact, I praised the party organisation. You people have misunderstood things. I am a staunch opponent of the BJP and the RSS," he said.
