Muguruza in Wimbledon quarters
Spanish tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza fought back to stun top seeded German Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the last 16 at Wimbledon. The 2015 Wimbledon finalist Muguruza needed two hours and 20 minutes and three match points to seal the win after firing 55 winners. Kerber's disappointing run at 2017 Grand Slams continues after she was knocked out in the last 16 at the Australian Open, where she won her maiden Grand Slam title in 2016, and was ousted from the first round at the French Open. Caracas-born Muguruza is set to play against Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat Polish Agnieszka Radwanska. Meanwhile, Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon after ten years, as she eased past Polish Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-4. Veteran American tennis player Venus Williams sailed into the quarterfinals at Wimbledon defeating Croatian Ana Konjuh 6-3, 6-2.
BCCI postpones announcement of new coach
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to postpone the selection of a new coach for the national team by a few days. Lalchand Rajput, Virender Sehwag, Richard Pybus, Ravi Shastri and Tom Moody were the candidates who were interviewed on Monday by the three-member CAC which includes former India captain Sourav Ganguly, former India batsman V.V.S. Laxman and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Former West Indies all-rounder Phil Simmons is also a candidate but is yet to be interviewed. The CAC members also said that Team India captain Virat Kohli will be consulted before a new coach, who will stay till the 2019 ODI World Cup, is appointed.
Harikrishna draws against Radjabov
Grand Master Pentala Harikrishna played out a draw with table topper Teimour Radjabov in a fourth round encounter to remain in second position at the the Geneva FIDE Grand Prix. The World No. 22 Indian, playing with black pieces, tried all the tricks up his sleeve but the Azerbaijani GM was at his defensive best and led the game towards neutral territory after one and a half hours. After the end of four rounds, Harikrishna has won one and drawn three games to be on two and a half points. He will next take on Russian GM, Ian Nepomniachtchi.
Fourteen-year-old Thai becomes youngest Ladies European Tour winner
A 14-year-old amateur from Thailand won on the Ladies European Tour, supplanting Lydia Ko as the youngest champion on the circuit. Atthaya Thitikul, aged 14 years, four months and 19 days, clinched a two-stroke victory at the Ladies European Thailand Championship at Phoenix Country Club in Pattaya. New Zealander Ko held the previous record as the youngest winner on the tour, after claiming the 2013 New Zealand Open at the age of 15 years, nine months and 17 days. Ko went on to become the world number one until being deposed last month by Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand.
Atletico Madrid mulls pulling out of ATK
Spanish football club Atletico Madrid are reportedly reconsidering their association with their Indian Super League (ISL) franchise Atletico de Kolkata (ATK). According to Spanish publication Marca, officials of the Spanish club have not cleared their future plans regarding the Indian franchise which has won the Indian league twice in 2014 and 2016. The Spanish officials also hailed India as an important country and regarded franchise's host city Kolkata even more special. Representatives of ATK, however, declined to comment on the issue when contacted. Atletico de Kolkata is owned by Kolkata Games and Sports Private Limited which comprises former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, Spanish La Liga club Atlético Madrid, alongside businessmen Harshavardhan Neotia, Sanjiv Goenka and Utsav Parekh.
Mercedes's Bottas wins Austrian Grand Prix
Mercedes's driver Valtteri Bottas won the Austrian Grand Prix, the ninth race of the Formula One World Championship. Finland's Bottas, who obtained a second pole position on Saturday, finished first after covering the circuit in one hour and 21:48.5 seconds, ahead of Ferrari's German Sebastian Vettel, current leader of the World Championship. Red Bull's Australian Daniel Ricciardo came third. British Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes finished fourth, followed by Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen. Vettel continues leading the Championship with 171 points, 20 points ahead of Hamilton.
