Indian hockey eves lose 0-1 to local Dutch club in warm-up clash

The Indian women's hockey team slumped to a narrow 0-1 defeat at the hands of Ladies Den Bosch in a closely-fought match in Den Bosch last evening. The Ladies Den Bosch, which consists of nine players who regularly turn up for the national squad, put the Indian team on the back foot when they won a penalty corner in the third minute. But goalkeeper Rajani Etimarpu was up to the task to keep the Dutch women from taking an early lead. She saved yet another penalty corner in the 17th minute to end the second quarter in a stalemate.

Australia arrive for limited overs tour

The Australian cricket team arrived in Chennai late on Friday night ahead of their limited overs tour of India. Fresh from a 2-1 win in their recent Test series in Bangladesh, the Australians will play five One-Day Internationals (ODI) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) in India. The Australians had seemed extremely vulnerable against spin bowling during the Bangladesh tour, specially during the their defeat in the second Test in Chittagong. That was their first ever Test defeat to Bangladesh. The visitors from Down Under will be keen to put that behind them and redeem themselves with some good performances against India.

India extend dominance at Commonwealth Weightlifting C'ships

Seema led yet another emphatic day for the country on Friday, clinching a gold and a silver, as India enjoyed six podium finishes at the 2017 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. Seema scooped a silver medal in the senior women's 75 Kg category by lifting 202 kg overall on the fifth day of action in Gold Coast. She lifted 91 kg in the snatch and 111 kg in the clean and jerk phase, with her overall score proving good enough to claim gold in the junior women's 75kg event.

U Mumba defeat Patna Pirates in PKL contest

U Mumba showed remarkable composure in the last five minutes as they registered a comfortable 51-41 win over Patna Pirates in the Inter Zone Challenge Week of the fifth Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) in Sonepat on Saturday. Kashiling Adake scored 15 points while Shrikant Jadhav chipped in with 13 as U Mumba asserted their dominance over their rivals. Pardeep Narwal's heroic effort of 21 points went in vain as Patna paid the price for a lacklustre first half performance.

PCB announces match officials for World XI tour

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a panel of umpires and referees for next week's Independence Cup to be played between World XI and Pakistan in Lahore. Aleem Dar of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Ahsan Raza of the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires will officiate in the series opener at the Gaddafi Stadium on September 12. Shozab Raza, also from the international panel, will be the TV umpire. The second match of the series, to be played on September 13, will be umpired by Ahmed Shahab and Shozab Raza, with Ahsan Raza as the TV umpire. The series finale, which will be played on September 15, will be umpired by Ahsan Raza and Shozab Raza, with Ahmed Shahab as the TV umpire.

Real Madrid lose 2 points after 1-1 home draw against Levante

Madrid, Sep 9 (IANS) Real Madrid lost two points after a 1-1 home draw against Levante in the third round of La Liga football championship at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid on Saturday. Spanish forward Ivan Lopez Alvarez, known as Ivi, opened scoring for Levante just 12 minutes into the match. Spanish winger Lucas Vazquez scored the equaliser for defending champions Real Madrid in the 36th minute. Vázquez poked home after Sergio Ramos' header was saved off a corner.

ATK sign Spanish defender Jordi Montel

Indian Super League (ISL) franchise ATK on Saturday confirmed the signing of Spanish defender Jordi Figueras Montel for the upcoming season of the football tournament. The centre-back played for Spanish football clubs Celta, Real Betis and Real Valladolid earlier. The defender last played in German football club Karlsruher Sport-Club, scoring two goals in 17 matches in 2016-17.
