At least one person has been killed and another seriously injured after a shooting at a popular spot in San Jose, California, that is hosting a World Cup “fan zone” which has been screening matches.
San Jose Police said that the second victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The shooting occurred at the San Pedro Square, where crowds have gathered to watch the matches on outdoor screens.
At the time of the shooting, there were no World Cup games being screened as the match of the day had already finished airing at around 2 pm local time.
Despite the match concluding, the area had been busy with visitors and residents, local reports said.
Police took over the entertainment district and shut down roads as a homicide investigation is underway.
San Jose Police said in a statement on X: “One victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“This incident is being investigated as a homicide. Several surrounding streets are closed in the area.”
An emergency crew were seen pushing a person on a stretcher.
The Bay Area has hosted about five World Cup matches so far, with the latest one being between Bosnia and the host United States.
