Will Real Madrid re-sign Sergio Ramos in January? Understanding why defender’s return could happen THIS TIME

Sergio Ramos hopes to bid farewell to football after one final stint in the Real Madrid shirt, and the La Liga team could really do with his experience as Xabi Alonso’s men are fighting Barcelona a close battle for the domestic crown

With Real Madrid battling defensive fitness issues, former captain Sergio Ramos is reportedly open to making a brief return, according to Spanish media. While the veteran centre-back making his intentions known about a comeback after leaving the Santiago Bernabéu is not a fresh development since departing in 2021, he will receive a more patient hearing in the Spanish capital this time, the report said.

At 39, Ramos feels his experience can ensure Real Madrid are compensated for the leadership lacking in their backline following the injury issues of captain Dani Carvajal and the experienced Antonio Rüdiger and Éder Militão. Los Blancos were surprised to learn about their former captain's proposal but are seriously analysing whether such a move will work in their favour at this difficult juncture.

What Ramos is looking for is a short-term contract, Fichajes said in a report. That could be why Real are discussing whether his return could make a difference in the absence of Carvajal and Militão. A draw at Girona means Real have handed over the La Liga pole position to Barcelona, who beat Alavés 3–1. Barça have 34 points, one more than their great rivals after fourteen rounds.

Why does Sergio Ramos need a homecoming?

Currently contracted to CF Monterrey, Ramos will be a free agent in January, and the fact that he came forward with the proposal means Real can afford to take their time on the matter, Fichajes said. The report added that he is also not expecting a hefty pay cheque as part of the deal, emphasising that the club’s priority is to ensure the current team dynamic remains unaffected. However, Sergio Ramos is also harbouring the dream of bidding farewell to the game as a Real Madrid player — receiving an emotional send-off at the Bernabéu for the man who ultimately delivered the 'La Décima'.

During his 16 seasons at Europe's most celebrated club, former Spain captain Ramos played 671 official matches, netting 101 goals — an extraordinary statistic for a centre-back. He became the highest-scoring defender in La Liga history in 2020 and won 22 major titles. He has won five La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions Leagues, four FIFA Club World Cups, and three UEFA Super Cups.
