India's women boxers created history at the World Boxing Cup final in Greater Noida on Thursday (November 20). The team of Arundhati Choudhary, Preeti Pawar, Minakshi Hooda and Nupur Sheoran put up unprecedented performances in their respective categories to claim gold medals. It meant a perfect golden sweep for India's women in the final.

Sheoran's victory in the 80 kg category completed India's golden sweep in the women's boxing section for India after she defeated Uzbekistan's Oltinoy Sotimboeva in the final. Earlier in the day, Choudary set the ball rolling with her win in the 70 kg category final, having overcome Uzbekistan’s Aziza Zokirova 5-0 for a historic gold mendal.

Choudhary's efforts were soon followed by glory for Pawar who also produced a crushing 5-0 win against Italy’s Sirine Charaabi in the 54 kg category final. In the 48 kg section final, Hooda was at her ruthless best as she crushed Uzbekistan’s Fozilova Farzona to give India another 5-0 win in the women's Boxing Cup final. Another gold came in the 57 kg where reigning champion Jaismine Lamboria won by a 4-1 margin to give India yet another gold.

The historic performance from the women boxers have helped India to compensate for a relatively underwhelming performance from the men who couldn't claim a single gold in their final across categories. Nevertheless, claiming silver medals are still noteworthy achievements and on the whole, India endured a hugely successful day at the World Boxing Cup final.
