Less than 24 hours since India's first-ever World Cup title in women's cricket, the accolades keep coming for Harmanpreet Kaur and her girls. On Monday (November 3) afternoon, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a whopping cash reward of Rs 51 crore for the World Cup-winning team.
The announcement was made by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia through an official annoucement to ANI. This reward is the Board's way of acknowledging the Indian team's unprecedented achievement after they beat South Africa in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
"BCCI is elated and without touching anything from the ICC kitty, BCCI on its own is going to pay, as a reward, of INR 51 crores to the Indian team. That amount will go to the players, selectors as well as the support staff headed by Amol Muzumdar." said a jubilant Saikia to the ANI.
For those unaware, the International Cricket Council's prize money for the tournament champions is $4.48 million which amounts to roughly Rs 42 crore and this itself is a historic announcement from the ICC. The previous men's ODI World Cup in 2023 saw champions Australia getting a prize money of $4 million.
Meanwhile, the prize money for 2025 Women's World Cup champions is a mammoth hike from the 2022 edition when Australia were awarded $1.32 million. With the gargantuan progress of women's cricket across the globe, the dynamic rise in prize money is an encouraging sight for the future of the game.
