The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed a fine on Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav on Friday for making comments considered "political" after India's win against Pakistan in the Asia Cup group league match. The ICC imposed a fine of 30 per cent of Yadav's match fee.
The ICC's move comes after the Pakistan Cricket Board complained to the Council that Yadav's comments brought disrepute to the game. During the match on September 14, the Indian cricketers refused to shake hands with the Pakistan players after the match. Yadav also dedicated India's win to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and the Indian armed forces.
The India skipper's hearing was conducted by ICC match referee Richie Richardson. Yadav has reportedly been told not to make any statement that could be construed as political in the remainder of the tournament.
Tensions between the two sides have been running high starting with India's refusal to do a traditional handshake with Pakistani players at the time of toss and after the games as a gesture of solidarity with the Pahalgam victims. During the hearing, Yadav told he was not guilty of the charges.
