With the addition of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha alongside the last-minute boost of Benjamin Sesko, it is understandable why United don't see a future with Højlund anymore. The Red Devils have also been on the hunt for a prolific striker upfront, given the ineffectiveness of their attacking resources in the 2024-25 season. Manager Ruben Amorim, who took over after the midpoint of the previous season, has been vocal about adapting his trademark 3-4-3 formation into United's game plan, which understandably means a revamp of resources on all fronts.
Rasmus Højlund, who arrived from Atalanta a couple of years ago, has managed 26 goals from 95 career appearances for the club. While the 22-year-old was willing to stay and fight for his spot initially, reports suggested that Amorim wanted to keep Joshua Zirkzee, another underperforming striker, but intends to sell Højlund.
Hojlund endured an underwhelming 2024-25 season, as did most of United's players, but he has a strong view on his future at the club.
“I think the most important (thing) for me is just to keep working hard and stay focused and then obviously we’ll see what happens,” Højlund had said. “I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens.”
A mere 14 goals from 62 appearances is far from ideal for a striker but he has been in strong form in the pre-season friendlies. Despite the uncertainty around his future, Hojlund has his mind clear. He realises that if and when United get their potential targets in the mix, he could face a lot more unstability regarding his role in the side.
