Amidst recent reports claiming that Benjamin Sesko's choice of Manchester United means Newcastle United will not let Alexander Isak join Liverpool this summer, notable football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano said that the deal is still on.

Slovenian striker Sesko was Newcastle United's chosen candidate to replace the 25-year-old Isak, who had made his intentions to join Liverpool clear. The Magpies were confident of bringing him on board from RB Leipzig, but the striker ultimately chose United, who are without any European competition this upcoming season. As a result, NUFC would be without a clinical backup if Isak were to also leave, and they were said to have ended discussions with Liverpool. They had rejected the opening bid for Isak and were waiting for the Premier League champions to return with a revised sum before making a U-turn in light of the Sesko fiasco. Isak was reportedly angered by this development after it was communicated to him.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano on Sunday claimed there is a realistic chance of Isak becoming a Red before the summer transfer window closes. Responding to a report that claimed the Swedish forward was told by his club this morning that there was no chance he was going to be sold this summer, Romano reportedly said, "I'm not aware of that, and also Eddie Howe says he's not aware of that."

The reality of the situation is that Isak wants a switch to Anfield and is unwilling to sign a new contract with NUFC, he said.

"He wants Liverpool and Liverpool want him. That's the story. Now it depends on Newcastle, but at the moment Newcastle have not closed the door on Isak's move to Liverpool. It's still an open story - it's not done as of today. Liverpool maintain their focus on Alexander Isak," reports quoted the expert as saying on his YouTube channel.

As things stand, the Swedish attacker is unlikely to start Newcastle's opening game of the 2025-26 English Premier League season. Isak has also allegedly started to receive mixed reactions within the players' camp, with some players reportedly unhappy with his presence at training, forcing the management to allot a different time slot for him to practice.
