Manchester Test: Joe Root overtakes Ricky Ponting to become all-time 2nd highest run-scorer in Tests

In the second session of Day 3 of the Manchester Test, Joe Root went past Ricky Ponting to become the second highest run scorer in Tests.

The records keep coming for Joe Root in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar trophy. At Lord's last week, the talismanic England batter had notched up his 37th Test ton, which moved him past Rahul Dravid and Steve Smith in the list of most career hundreds in the longest format. Now, after his hundred on the third day of the fourth Test against India in Manchester, Root sits at joint-fourth spot in that list, level with Kumar Sangakkara. Only Ricky Ponting (41), Jacques Kallis (45) and Sachin Tendulkar (51) are ahead of him in that order.

Friday (July 25) was a day when Root made major inroads into another historical list in Test cricket. During the morning session of the third day against India in Manchester, Root when on 31*, got to 13290* career runs, overtaking Kallis and Dravid, both of whom ended their careers with 13289 runs in Tests. It moved Root to third spot in the all-time highest run scorers list in Tests, only behind Ponting (13378) and Tendulkar (15921) in the list. 

Later on, with the tea break around the corner, Root moved past 119 and in the process, knocked off Ponting's career tally of runs as well with only Tendulkar's all-time record in front of him. Whether he can breach that mark or not, only time will tell. But fo now, it is Root and England's time to celebrate

At tea on the third day, England had rampaged their way to 433/4 with the first innings lead 75 at the moment.
