South Africa's bowling spearhead Lungi Ngidi pulled out of the three-match home Twenty20I series against India that starts Sunday due to an ankle sprain. Ngidi was replaced by Beuran Hendricks in the squad.

27-year-old Ngidi is in a race to be fit as he wants to play the opening Test match of the tour that begins on December 26, Tuesday. According to Reuters, Ngidi suffered a left lateral ankle sprain.

Beuran Hendricks, 33, made the last of his 19 appearances in the T20 format for South Africa against Ireland in July 2021. Rookies Ottniel Baartman, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams are the other seam options for the Proteas as Kagiso Rabada was rested.

India's tour of South Africa includes three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests. The T20I series is first in line and will begin on December 10 in Durban.
