Tottenham Hotspur have sacked Jose Mourinho, parting ways with the manager a year and a half after signing a five-year deal.
Following a poor run of form, Tottenham Hotspur decided to show Mourinho the door as the club currently lie seventh in the Premier League.
“The club can today announce that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have been relieved of their duties,” read a statement released by Tottenham earlier in the day.
In the statement, chairman Daniel Levy, added that he regrets that things didn’t work out, but Mourinho will “always be welcome here”.
“Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club. José is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”
Former Spurs player Ryan Mason is expected to take over as caretaker manager until June.
The Portuguese signed on with the Spurs in November 2019 until 2023 after the club sacked Mauricio Pochettino.
Under Mourinho, the nrth London club climbed from 14th position to sixth in his first season.
However, the recent dismal run of form has forced the Spurs to review the direction that Mourinho was taking the club to. His sacking comes a month after Tottenham’s Europa League exit in the round of 16, with a 3-0 defeat by Dinamo Zagreb in the second leg. With this, the chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League took a major hit.
Mourinho’s last game was the 2-2 draw with Everton on Friday night.
Spurs are set to take on Southampton in the top flight on Wednesday evening, with their next fixture following on Sunday as they face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
Tottenham Hotspur also announced on Sunday they are part of the hugely controversial breakway European Super League.
