Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh slammed citizens who were stepping out during the 21-day lockdown announced by the government amid the coronavirus crisis, and also came in defence of the police personnel who were on duty at this time.

The cricketer took to Twitter to express his frustration over people flouting the orders put in place during the three-week lockdown. Sharing a TikTok video that showed a group of men heckling and abusing a policeman, Harbhajan that people’s attitude towards the police needed to change. He added that the police were putting their lives at risk and doing their duty for the citizens.

“We have to change our fu**ing attitude towards police.don't forget they are putting their life to save ours.they also have families but they r doing their duty for the nation..why can't we all just stay at home and be sensible for once for better tomorrow. Plz be sensible, (sic)" Harbhajan tweeted.

A few followers of Harbhajan on Twitter informed him that the man seen physically and verbally abusing the police has been arrested, although it has not been verified. However, many others pointed out that violence is shown from both sides, and that police personnel and citizens tend to make situations worse.

People have been advised to stay indoors to isolate themselves and practice distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. A 21-day countrywide lockdown was announced from Wednesday to ensure that people practiced social distancing, which is by far the best way to tackle the spread of the coronavirus.

In India, over 650 confirmed cases have been reported as of March 26, with 13 deaths.
