The Delhi Police's elation at the successful extradition of businessman and alleged bookie Sanjeev Chawla from United Kingdom last week seems to have drained off a bit, as the investigators are finding him a tough nut to crack.

Chawla has challenged the police custody, claiming it is in contravention of the assurances given by the Indian government to the UK government in London. Charged for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing scandal of 2000 which also involved former South African captain, late Hansie Cronje, Chawla was sent to Tihar Jail on February 14 till further orders, a day after a trial court sent him to a 12-day police custody.

"He is not cooperating at all,"revealed one of the investigators to THE WEEK. "Otherwise, by now, we would have definitely got something out of him. We could not get enough time with him ever since he was handed over to us in London by the Metropolitan Police."

As per the source, the team could not ask him much on the flight since there were other passengers around. Also, administrative formalities post his arrival, too, consumed time. "The cops are keen to confront him with other chargesheeted people in the case, including some of those who were arrested.

"We are waiting for further orders from the Delhi HC on Wednesday," the source said.
