The Malayalam movie Kumbalangi Nights, directed by Madhu C. Narayanan, revolves around four half-brothers Saji (Soubin Shahir), Bobby (Shane Nigam), Bony (Sreenath Bhasi) and Franky (Matthew Thomas), who live under the same roof in a fishing hamlet called Kumbalangi. The film revolves around their love-hate relationship, occasional fistfights and family feuds. Their lives take a turn when Bobby falls in love with Baby (Anna Ben), his neighbour. Enter Shammi, played by Fahadh Faasil. A patriarchal, misogynistic 'head of family', Shammi, under a veneer of respectability, hides the most sociopathic of instincts. "Shammi hero aada (Shammi is a hero)," is a dialogue popularised by the 'complete man', as Shammi often refers to himself, in the movie.
Cricketer Mohammed Shami is the latest to jump on that bandwagon. After India's emphatic win over New Zealand in a thrilling contest at Seddon Park to clinch the Twenty20 series, Kerala cricketer Sanju Samson posted a video on Facebook wherein he is seen playing table tennis with Shami, the star of the night. “What a lovely game of cricket tonight..!! And a special heart shown by this Hero !! Nammude Swandam Shami bhai!!” Sanju wrote.
In the video, Shami, after playing a smash, turns to the camera and deadpans Shami hero aada hero, playing on the similarities between his name and Shammi's.
Shami took two wickets in the final over of the Kiwis chase to dismiss dangerman Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor to force the game into a Super Over. This brought back memories of the 2019 World Cup final, which New Zealand agonisingly lost to England on boundary count. New Zealand captain Kane Williamon did all he could, both in the run chase (95 off 48 balls) and the Super Over (11), but still it did not prove to be enough.
