One run was all that stood between David Warner and Rohit Sharma this World Cup. At 648 runs in nine innings, Sharma emerged as the highest run-scorer and therefore the winner of the golden bat award. Warner, with 647 runs, missed out on the award by a hair’s breadth, though he had played an innings more than Sharma.

This was a remarkable year for Rohit Sharma. He became the first batsman to hit ten centuries in a year, the only one to score five centuries in a single World Cup, and only the second batsman after Sachin to score six World Cup tons.

His notable World Cup performances include smashing 140 in the match against Pakistan, and a century each in the matches against South Africa, England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He joins Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar as the only Indians to have won the Golden Bat award.

At the bowling end, Australia’s Mitchell Starc emerged as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 27 to his name — a comfortable six wickets ahead of New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson.

Starc is considered by many to be the world’s fastest bowler. He used his deadly speed to take six wickets against Bangladesh, his perfect 145kph Yorker technique to take out England’s Ben Stokes and his 5 for 26 against Australia.

Neither Sharma nor Starc were able to take their team to the World Cup finals, however, but one awardee did. This was New Zealand captain Kane Williamson’s reaction when he was told he had won the Player of the Tournament award.

With 578 runs, Williamson has scored more runs in a World Cup than any other captain in a single World Cup. His centuries against South Africa and West Indies were decisive, helping New Zealand arrive at the final despite losses against Australia, England and Pakistan. His kindly and unassuming demeanour won hearts around the world even as he single-handedly shouldered the burden of carrying his team’s batting order.

So, there you have it: The best batsman, best bowler and best player of the World Cup 2019. These are not the only accolades a player can get, however, as the ICC have also released their ‘Team of the Tournament’, which stars Rohit Sharma, Jason Roy, Kane Williamson (captain), Shakib Al Hasan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Alex Carey (wicketkeeper), Mitchell Starc, Jofra Archer, Lockie Ferguson, Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult as the 12th man.
