Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is leaving the club with immediate effect after a poor start to the Premier League season, according to a club statement.

“Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement. “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.”

United are currently sixth in the table with 26 points from 17 matches, their worst league start in 28 years.

The Portuguese coach is leaving the club after two and a half years in charge. Mourinho won the Europa League and the League Cup in the 2016-17 season before guiding the team to second in the league last season and reaching the FA Cup final. His final match with United was on Sunday when they were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool.

Until Manchester United finds a full-time manager, a caretaker manager will be appointed till the end of the current season.
