In an unexpected reversal, Apple has thrown its weight behind California's SB 244, known as the "Right to Repair" bill. The move is set to have a significant impact on the growing Right to Repair movement. Previously, Apple had lobbied against similar legislation, but it now supports this comprehensive bill that aims to empower consumers and repair shops.

Apple's change of heart is significant in the ongoing debate about the right to repair consumer electronics and appliances. In a letter addressed to California Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman, the tech giant stated its endorsement for SB 244, emphasizing its commitment to consumer safety, privacy, and security.

The bill covers a wide range of products, including phones, laptops, and household appliances. However, it excludes certain items like game consoles and alarm systems due to concerns about security and piracy.

Apple's support for the California Right to Repair Act comes after the company introduced its Self Service Repair program last year, allowing users to rent tools for DIY repairs. The company's backing of the bill signals a shift in its approach to repairability.

The Right to Repair movement has gained momentum, with similar bills introduced in approximately 14 other states. Last year, New York enacted the Digital Fair Repair Act, which mandates manufacturers to provide diagnostic and repair information to independent repair providers and consumers.

India values 'Right to Repair'

India has taken a significant step towards empowering consumers with the introduction of the "Right to Repair" law. Under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the Indian government has launched a dedicated online portal, serving as a one-stop shop for warranty-related and post-sales information for consumer products.

The "Right to Repair" law, gaining widespread attention, is a crucial consumer right that allows individuals to exercise control over their purchased products. The law is expected to benefit a wide range of consumers, from tech-savvy individuals who enjoy tinkering with their gadgets to those seeking cost-effective solutions for repairing their appliances and vehicles.
