The precarious pause: Why Trump extended Iran ceasefire and what it means

Just hours before the deadline ran out, US President Donald Trump blinked once again, extending the ceasefire with Iran and thereby pushing an already fraught conflict into a precarious, open-ended limbo. Unlike his earlier truce, which came with a two-week timeline, this extension has no clear expiry date.

Trump made the announcement after his diplomatic outreach through Vice President J.D. Vance's proposed trip to Islamabad had to be cancelled, with Tehran showing no interest in engaging on Washington's terms. Trump pointed to Pakistan's request to mediate and, also to visible cracks within the Iranian establishment as reasons to hold off on further military action. The result, for now, is a tense stalemate: the fighting remains paused, but any meaningful diplomacy remains out of reach, with neither side willing to blink first. Washington and Tehran believe time is on their side. Both think they have more leverage and a greater capacity to absorb pain—and both may be wrong.

For the US, domestic politics is shaping the calculus almost as much as strategy. Trump is aware of the political costs of dragging this out. The MAGA base is worried, and the Republican leadership is alarmed, particularly with mid-term elections drawing closer. Trump hopes that the ceasefire extension could buy him some time: it avoids the risks of a military escalation, while maintaining pressure on Tehran. Central to that approach is an aggressive economic campaign. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's doctrine of "economic fury" has produced a tightening naval blockade aimed at squeezing Iran's oil revenues. The thinking in Washington appears to be that if the ceasefire holds long enough, storage facilities at Kharg Island will reach capacity, effectively forcing Iran to shut down oil production and deepening the economic pain.

There are wider worries, too. A return to open conflict could set off a chain of disruptions across critical maritime routes. Washington is particularly anxious about the Houthis targeting the Bab al-Mandab strait, which would compound the already serious fallout from instability around the Strait of Hormuz. So, the administration has doubled down on sanctions enforcement, going after the vessels and middlemen that keep Iran's shadow trade networks running.

Iran, though, sees things rather differently. It has little appetite for more fighting—it has taken a major hit from sustained American and Israeli strikes—but it frames the entire conflict in existential terms. For Tehran, this is about regime survival and the leadership is confident that it can endure more hardship than Washington can handle. The economic toll, piled on top of years of sanctions and chronic mismanagement, has made life considerably harder for ordinary Iranians, yet the leadership seems to believe it can weather it.

Tehran has also drawn some comfort from recent events. By keeping the Strait of Hormuz shut, it knows it has flipped the script on Washington. The ceasefire extension, in Iran's assessment, is a sign that Trump has lost his nerve. No wonder, it chose to keep Vance waiting, refusing to travel to Islamabad.

The blockade has become the central obstacle to any progress. While Washington considers it indispensable, Iran feels it is an unacceptable precondition that makes talks impossible. Iranian officials say they won't negotiate under what they regard as an economic siege. They have also tied their own actions to it directly—as long as the blockade stands, Hormuz stays closed. There is even talk of forcibly challenging the blockade if things deteriorate further.

There is also the question of who exactly is calling the shots in Tehran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps appears to have tightened its grip on power, sidelining more pragmatic voices within the civilian leadership. President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf seem to have limited room for manoeuvre. Trump himself alluded to this when announcing the extension, noting the fragmented nature of decision-making in Iran.

The IRGC has been characteristically unambiguous in its messaging. It has denied any desire for a ceasefire extension and cast Trump's move as an admission of American weakness. There is also some understandable suspicion: some within the IRGC suspect the ceasefire may be cover for covert operations, or part of a longer game to trap Iran in a perpetual state of threat and economic constraint.

In this atmosphere of mutual mistrust and strategic rigidity, the prospects for any real diplomacy look dim. What has emerged is a fragile equilibrium held together by caution, hostility and a shared reluctance to be the one who makes things worse.
