Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday urged people attending the INDIA bloc's rally in Delhi to support local traders by making some festive purchases during their visit to the national capital.

His appeal came amid concerns raised by traders that the opposition rally could disrupt business during the crucial festive season. Several traders' associations had urged the Congress leadership to postpone the event, citing the possible impact on sales.

In a video message posted on X, Rahul Gandhi dismissed concerns that the rally would hurt local businesses and accused the BJP of spreading rumours.

“It's the festive season. Diwali, Chhath and Bhai Dooj are here. I want the lakhs of people coming to Delhi from different parts of the country to support the local traders,” he said.

“Along with protesting, marching and attending the rally tomorrow, do a little shopping too,” he added.

Earlier, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) had written to Rahul Gandhi and senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, requesting the party to postpone its November 1 protest rally at Ramlila Maidan.

The traders' body warned that the event could affect business worth an estimated ₹10,000-12,000 crore across 20 markets in Delhi.

The Federation of Sadar Bazar Trades Association, the apex body representing traders in Delhi's Sadar Bazar, had also expressed concern over the possible disruption to festive-season business.

According to the association, the period from Dhanteras to Diwali accounts for an estimated turnover of around ₹25,000 crore, making it a crucial business window for thousands of traders, shopkeepers and small business owners.

Responding to the concerns, Rahul reiterated that the rally and festive shopping could go hand in hand, urging participants to visit local shops and support small businesses.

“Let's do both. Tomorrow, there will be a march, there will be a rally, and lakhs of people will also buy things from the small shops of our local traders. Much love to all of you. Happy Diwali. Jai Hind,” he said.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the INDIA bloc's rally at Ramlila Maidan, with opposition leaders and supporters from various states arriving in Delhi. The rally is aimed at highlighting alleged electoral irregularities and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
