Jawaharlal Nehru University has dismissed its professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam after he was accused of sexual harassment by at least 10 students following an inquiry by the University's internal committee.

Akoijam is also the Congress MP representing Inner Manipur in the Lok Sabha.

The university order was signed by JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit. It states that the university's internal committee conducted an inquiry into the allegations against the professor.

The professor was associated with the Centre for the Study of Social Systems in the School of Social Sciences.

The committee said that the university recommended major punishment under the applicable service rules.

“Based on the findings, the Internal Committee (IC) recommended Major Punishment to Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam,” the order stated.

The order specified that the dismissal would take effect immediately.

“AND WHEREAS, based on the findings, the Internal Committee (IC) recommended Major Punishment to Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, as per service rules [(UGC Ref. No. F.91-1/2013 (TFGS)/10(1)] and by invoking Rule 11(ix) of Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules," the order read.

Akoijam was elected to the Lok Sabha from Inner Manipur in the 2024 general election as a candidate of the Indian National Congress.

The termination comes after the Delhi Commission for Women sought a report from the JNU administration in September over the allegation made by the female students.

DCW Chairperson Lata Gupta took suo motu cognisance of a video shared on social media in which students alleged that they submitted a complaint against the professor. The complaint was submitted to the JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit in May 2026.

The students alleged that the university did not take appropriate action on the complaint.
