The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued flash flood warnings for multiple states till September 2. Rainfall ranging from very heavy to isolated is expected across parts of India.
Cyclonic circulation and flood warnings for East
It is observed that a well-marked Low Pressure Area has covered the gangetic region of West Bengal and the northern coastal Odisha. A cyclonic circulation associated with the Low Pressure Area is likely to move west-northwestwards to north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal in the next 24 hours.
This has resulted in flash flood warnings for eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. Among these states, Chhattisgarh and Odisha face the most severe rainfall and flood threat.
Several districts of Chhattisgarh, especially in isolated areas, are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm. These districts include Gaurela, Pendra, Marwahi, Balrampur, Surguja, Manendragarh, Chirmiri, Bharatpur, Surajpur, Raigarh, Korba, Jashpur, Baloda Bazar, and Raipur. The forecast for the state is widespread rainfall till September 3, and fairly widespread rainfall till September 7.
Forecast of 40-50 kmph strong winds and widespread heavy rainfall is expected in northern Odisha. The districts of Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur are at risk of flash floods.
Thunderstorm, lightning in the Northeast
Widespread rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till September 6. Thunderstorms and lightning coupled with 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rainfall is also expected in isolated areas of the region.
Monsoon trough in the North
A monsoon trough at the mean sea level now passes through the cities of Amritsar, Chandigarh, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, and Patna. This has meant that the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, and Punjab are likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall in the next two days, and isolated to scattered rainfall over the week till September 7. Amongst the states, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand has been given flash flood warnings.
Gusty winds and widespread rainfall in the South
Maharashtra’s Konkan region and Goa to receive widespread rainfall till September 7. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds reaching 40-50 kmph alongside isolated rainfall is the IMD forecast for coastal Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Telangana till September 6. Kerala, Lakshadweep, and Mahe are predicted to receive widespread rainfall till September 4.
