Accused men who abducted Manjeet Kaur absconding; Punjab influencer dies weeks after being set on fire
In a shocking incident, a Punjab social media influencer, Manjeet Kaur, died two months after she was allegedly abducted from Chandigarh and then tied to a tree and set on fire in Morinda.
Kaur, 28, died on August 26, after several weeks of treatment at the hospital for severe burn injuries.
Chandigarh police have not registered a case of abduction and murder after her mother, Kanta Devi, filed a complaint with the police.
According to her mother’s statement, they alleged that two acquaintances were responsible for kidnapping the woman. They also blamed the police for failing to record her statement on time.
The family said that a statement from Kaur could have provided crucial leads in the case.
Kharar DSP Ishan Singla denied the allegations of police inaction, saying the police had assisted the family.
“Since the place of occurrence falls under Chandigarh jurisdiction, the action was to be taken by Chandigarh Police. Kharar police provided full assistance to the victim’s mother, took her to the concerned police station, and facilitated the registration of the FIR in Chandigarh,” Singla said.
The statement to the police says that on July 3, acquaintances Shubi and Pinda allegedly called her daughter near a liquor store in Chandigarh’s Sector 34.
They abducted the woman in a car to Morinda in Punjab and assaulted her before tying her to a mulberry tree and then setting her on fire.
Kaur was found by a friend who used a blanket to extinguish the flame. She was taken to a hospital in Morinda and then moved to Max Hospital before being referred to PGIMER Chandigarh on July 9
Kaur, who hailed from Kharar, had around 1.46 lakh followers on Instagram, and nearly 4000 subscribers on YouTube.
Her posts promoted cosmetic products and videos featuring popular Punjabi and Haryanvi songs.
She is survived by her seven-year-old son.
CCTV footage and other evidence are being gathered from the route from sector 34 to Morinda by investigators.
People known to Kaur are also being questioned to establish a sequence of events.
