Former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee was found dead at the Trinamool Congress office near his residence in Rampurhat, Birbhum district, on Sunday morning.
According to police, Banerjee’s body was found hanging inside the party office and was sent for postmortem. They said a purported suicide note was also recovered from the premises, though the contents of the note were not immediately known.
Banerjee, a five-time MLA, was a close aide of Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. He had served as Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and held ministerial portfolios, including School Education and Agriculture, in the Mamata Banerjee government.
In the 2026 Assembly elections, Banerjee contested the Rampurhat seat on a TMC ticket but lost to BJP’s Dhruva Saha by more than 24,000 votes. He stayed away from active politics since the election.
Police believe the post-mortem report and the contents of the purported note could provide clues to the circumstances surrounding Asish Banerjee’s death.
Further details are awaited.
