Police in Anandnagar, Ahmedabad, had to open fire in self-defence after the accused in the rape of a 22-year-old woman at a PG tried to flee custody.
Daram Singh, 27, a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district, was arrested from Hebatpur early on Sunday.
After the arrest, the accused tried to escape police custody by attacking an officer.
A scuffle broke out, and Singh was shot in the leg. One constable was injured in the incident. They were both moved to the Civil Hospital for treatment.
A video of the accused pleading with officers showed him apologising, saying, "I won't do this again, forgive me once."
Singh was deployed as a security guard at a society in Jodhpur just six days before the crime occurred, police said.
The victim was a woman who was studying interior design in the city and was a paying guest in a flat in the society. She was on the terrace for a walk when the accused approached her with intentions to have sexual relations.
When she refused, the accused assaulted her and restrained her with a wire around her neck before raping her.
The wire prevented the woman from shouting for help. The assault lasted nearly an hour, police said.
Singh also took the woman’s phone and locked her on the terrace. She was rescued by a resident who lived on the floors below after she raised an alarm.
She was taken to hospital and police were informed.
CCTV footage of the incident shows the man taking the lift to the terrace during the time of the incident.
He had reportedly worked for different security agencies for the past four years.
DCP Zone 7, Shivam Verma, said that the woman’s condition is stable but that she is under severe trauma.
Verma said that she had been in the city for only two years.
Police will be recording the victim’s statement and probe if the accused guard kept track of her routine.
